General Themes

1938 in general  : set in Oyster Bay, Long Island juxtaposes the life of the "Society" set and their servants, and the fragile foundations on which reputations are built. (There have been two different versions of the stage musical, one follows the original film more closely and focusses strongly on the journalist's view of society lifestyles, the other is a more intimate depiction of the household and family of the Lords'.)
